Diane,

The problem that Geoff was/is avoiding by not using the description field was not that it didn't export but that the programs he was importing into didn't have a place for it.

I don't know whether that's the case with anything these days. I've never heard anyone mention it.

I just tried Ancestry as I don't normally include Events when uploading a tree to Ancestry. It copes with the Description field fine. But the Event Notes have gone in as Unsourced Citations.

*Subject:* [LegacyUG] Description Field in Event Notes

I am in the process of tidying up my data after using Legacy since
2007. Up till now I have filled in the description field in Events as
I liked the way it printed out, putting the description field next to
the place, before the notes, making it useful to print out reports for
reviewing away from the computer.

I am aware that Geoff Rasmussen does not use the description field as
apparently, it does not export to GEDCOMs for use in other genealogy
software. If I swap the information from the description field to the
Event notes field, can the notes be exported to a GEDCOM for import to
other genealogy software?

Also, I note that Geoff leaves a blank first line when entering census
details in the Event notes so that it has a better appearance in the
Chronology view. Should I be doing this for all Event notes?

Are there any beta users of Legacy 9 who know if the description field
will remain in Legacy 9?

I’d be grateful for your opinions before I start my big tidy up.

Diane
