I am back again with another source citation question, this one
concerning citing censuses. I have begun following Geoff's suggestions
(from the Legacy website) for citation format but I need some
clarification and suggestions from Geoff and the group.

With a few exceptions, I have been taking my census information from the
Ancestry.com and Genealogy.com websites and have listed both as
repositories at which my information can be found. But, under the
master source that I have created for each census itself, who is the
"Author"? Geoff's example shows "Minnesota. Hennepin County". Geoff,
I'm not sure why your example uses the state and county as the author.
Wouldn't our federal government be the author of the federal census or
am I missing the entire concept of "Author" in this instance?

Second, when using the web version of censuses, from what would I take
the "Publication Facts"?

Polly,
After examining the footnotes of the NGSQ, I decided to follow the way most reported their census records, as closely as I possibly could. Here is how I do it.

Author: 1900 U.S. Census (population)
Title: Massac County, Illinois
[Formatting of title, I click "None"]
Publ. facts: NARA Micropublication T623
[Print in (parentheses) is unchecked]
Citation Detail: Roll 329, town of Brooklyn Prct., ED 48, p. 15B, dwelling 286, family 308
Detail Comments would have where and when I downloaded it from, example:
Downloaded 17 Jan 2003 from Ancestry.com (subscription database)
[This prints only on the first time this source is used]
The only time I include the name of the head of the household is if someone is living with a none family member, such as a servant.

So the source will print out as follows:

1900 U.S. Census (population), Massac County, Illinois, NARA Micropublication T623, Roll 329, town of Brooklyn Prct., ED 48, p. 15B, dwelling 286, family 308. Downloaded 17 Jan 2003 from Ancestry.com (subscription database).

This allows someone who is reading my reports, but doesn't have access to Ancestry to look at the actual NARA film.

And in case anyone asks, yes I do add a repository, but I usually don't print those, as I usually put that information into the Detail Comments, but in a better format.

Hope this helps you,
