I suggest not calling St. Louis as being in St. Louis County. The
information below is from the State's web site regarding the history of our
counties. It is wrong to call St. Louis as being in St. Louis County - that
is physically a different area with a different county seat of government
that does not include the city of St. Louis. I don't really care what
format is used, but would hate to see incorrect designations used.
Saint Louis County
Organized October 1, 1812, as one of the five original counties; named for
St. Louis (King Louis IX of France), patron saint of King Louis XV.

Saint Louis City
Organized August 22, 1876, under the 1875 Constitution of the State of
Missouri. Until that date, St. Louis City and St. Louis County were one
entity. After that time, St. Louis City became its own entity, maintaining
its own courthouse and records.

Thanks,

Jim

I understand that an independent city does not belong to a county. However,
I prefer the
geographical aspects rather than political and as they are physically
located within a
county I enter as any other city, i.e. Saint Louis, Saint Louis County,
Missouri. I don't
think the fact that it is an independent city really has a lot to do with it
as far as an
individual's record is concerned. One can always clarify in notes if this is
perceived as
being a problem.

That's right, the city does not have a county. So actually A is correct and
B and C are incorrect and misleading. But to keep it obvious, I use "St.
Louis (Independent City), Missouri, USA" and I write in the Location Notes
that it is NOT part of St. Louis County, to remind me if I later wonder
about it.
