Ok, Jack, now let's have a look at a Family Group Report for John SMITH and Mary BLACK: under your system the daughter they named "Mary Louise" has now ended up as being described as "Mary Louise (Lou) Smith White" with the surname of "JONES". Now, a person with the surname "JONES" on a Family Group Sheet" for SMITH is not really logical is it (unless fostered or adopted perhaps)? To further compound the situation if the SMITH Parents had say six daughters who ALL managed to marry, you would, under your system have six different surnames recorded on that one family group sheet, wouldn't you? Or am I missing something here?
One thing with record keeping, Jack, is to be consistent. If you choose to use such a system, you can't then import other records and not adapt them to your system, as you said you did. You must keep things consistent. From what you have written, you really need to sit down with an experienced genealogist, locally, and learn how to be consistent and accurate in your record keeping. Do this before you get too far down the track to ever make it reversible. Good luck! Hi LB & Alice, To record a daughter of a couple: John SMITH and Mary Black SMITH Daughter: Mary Louise (Lou) Smith First marriage to Tom WHITE: GIVEN: Mary Louise (Lou) Smith SURNAME: WHITE Full Name on reports: Mary Louise (Lou) Smith WHITE Second marriage to Sam Jones: GIVEN: Mary Louise (Lou) Smith White SURNAME: JONES Full Name on reports: Mary Louise (Lou) Smith White JONES If she then has a daughter with Sam Jones: Daughter: Mary Alice JONES I hope this explains my "unique" system. It isn't really incompatible with the other system. In fact, I have records I have imported from other people's GEDCOMs that I didn't convert to my system. Just curious, Jack: how do you initially record a daughter of a couple? Do you use the name the parents gave her? Or, do you record her as you subsequently find her when married? From what I have read of your rather innovative system, it appears the daughter of say John SMITH and Mary BLACK would be recorded in your system as "Mary Louise (Lou) Smith BROWN", where in fact her name was just "Mary Louis SMITH". To further expand on your system, let's say Mary Louise subsequently marries and divorces a further two times in her later life. Would she then be recorded as "Mary Louise (Lou) Smith Brown White Jones" (where Jones is last husband)? Under your system, do you keep adding to the daughter's first names as subsequent records come to light? How are subsequent children described for each of the marriages? By all means, if you are happy with this rather convoluted system, continue to use it, but do the world a favour and NOT share such records with anyone else - please! Hi Denese & Robert & Rich, Thanks for your comments about maiden names. I would never NOT record a maiden name, if I know it. I would simply put it with her GIVEN names, and show her married name as the SUR name. GIVEN = "Mary Louise (Lou) Smith" SURNAME = "Brown" FULLNAME = "Mary Louise (Lou) Smith Brown" (would appear on all reports & lists). <SNIP> I WOULD APPRECIATE COMMENTS ON MY PRACTICE AND WHY IT MAY OR MAY NOT BE DESIRABLE.
