Walt,

I believe that everyone has agreed that he can "use what ever works
for him". The disagreement seems to come from whether his file is
suitable for sharing. When people are working on a group project,
there need to be some general rules that everyone follows in order
for the collaboration to be successful.

Nobody will ever be consistent with such vague fields as "Notes"
and whether something is a General Note or a Marriage Note or whatever,
much less what should be contained within it or how it should be
formatted. And that doesn't matter.

However, fields that are absolutely critical for matching and combining
research (in this case, the Name fields), there is not that much room
for personal style. These fields are very well defined and their
usage has pretty much been standardized. Everyone naturally makes
the occasional error in entering data into their file, but when one
intentionally misuses a field that is critical to everyone else,
they should not expect their data to be of much value to others.

For his own use, anything goes! We all agree on that. But for the
purpose of collaboration, "plays well with others" is very crucial.

Bob

"Maiden Name"

For gosh sake, I can't believe this ridiculous discussion is still going on.
Let the guy use what ever works for him and others do the same .
