I don't know if this would be more confusing to you all but for me it works
  I had about 20 or so Elizabeths and many others with first names but no
known maiden name so I finally decide to solve it by this routine.  I enter
in the surname space the name of the persons married name followed by (unk
maiden name) so for Mrs Elizabeth Jones it would be Jones (unk maiden name).
As I said it works for me and is clear that it isn't her maiden name.
Just an idea.
