Hi Sherry,

Concerning PDF files created with Legacy 5...

Problem:
- This morning, I just updated to the latest Acrobat Reader (v. 7) and now
find I cannot read any pdf files ever created with Legacy Deluxe (versions 3
thru 5). The new Acrobat Reader has no problem with pdf files created with
other programs (OpenOffice.org, Mircosoft Word, etc), only the pdf files
created with Legacy. - It attempts to open the file, shows blank pages (even
a page count), but no text, no pictures, nothing.
- I would guess there's an issue with the lack of backward compatibility
from the Acrobat people themselves. So perhaps, if we want to share our
various genealogy reports in pdf format with other genealogists and family
members, we are being forced to keep up with the latest bells and whistles.
- Sherry, in your e-mail to Sharon on this subject, dated Oct 20, 2004, you
mentioned the Print Preview Engine that Legacy uses to create pdf files - it
creates an earlier version (Acrobat 3?) of pdf files - and that apparently
is causing the lack of compatibility with newer versions of both Acrobat and
Acrobat Reader. You also mentioned that the wonderful Legacy programmers are
looking for a more up-to-date Print Preview Engine to resolve this problem.

Questions:
- Sherry, what is the current status of the search for a replacement of the
tool used by Legacy for the creation of report files in Acrobat pdf format
(currently the Print Preview Engine)?
- Might we expect some relief in the next update?

Hoping with ancticipation, as the current situation leaves all pdf files
ever created with Legacy useless, unless the the recipient of these files
has an out-dated version of Acrobat Reader. -- I do realize in the mean time
I can likely create rtf files, import to OpenOffice.org (the free
alternative to MS Offic), and then save as pdf file to create compatible
reports.

Thank you in advance for checking into this for us, Sherry. :-)

The programmers have been looking around for one more up-to-date and reasonably priced to keep the cost of Legacy down. <snip>

Thanks for using Legacy.

What do you think? I need to make more copies of this same file, with some
updates, and do NOT want to have to print the whole file again just to get
the copies for 3 more people made.

About a moon ago, Sharon was having trouble with PDF files. I was interested
in this problem so I cast about looking for a PDF validator. I wasn't able
to find much. There is a free, Java-based toolkit called Multivalent that
includes a .pdf validator. I downloaded it but never got around to trying
it. Until now.

A small sample of .pdf files sized 100-300kB from a variety of online sites
(Adobe, Detroit Diesel, Leviton, and PowerQuest) all passed the validation
check.
I tried two .pdf files from Legacy 5 build of 5 Sept 2004, a Descendant
Chart (5kB) and a Descendant Narrative (25kB). Both failed to validate.
These findings seem to correlate with the trouble Sharon experienced at
Kinko's. At least some Legacy-generated .pdf files appear to be defective.

I created a PDF file for a Descendant Narrative, copied it to a CD and took
it to Kinko's to be printed and bound. They couldn't print it because of
Postscript errors. They could see the file on their computer screen fine,
but when it starts to print it skips the top part of the page, prints the
middle of the page and then prints the postscript errors and stops. <snip>
Kinko's said that there is probably some setting in the creation that
doesn't work with Postscript.
