Yes, I know that fixed pitch fonts keep text aligned, which is why I had suggested that to Ann.
What I had failed to do was to actually test this by creating the reports using a fixed pitch font for Notes. Even though Courier is specified as the font for Notes in the report options, that is ignored and Legacy creates reports using, in my case, Times New Roman for the Notes, which naturally destroys the formatting of the Courier used for the Notes on the data-entry screen. This appears to be yet another case of a Legacy program option that does absolutely nothing, making it necessary to test every single one of them because we cannot assume that they actually work in any specific situation, much less all the time. Judging from some of the threads posted here, every release of Legacy appears to be a public beta test -- some of the reported problems are fixed immediately (way to go!) and others are ignored forever (boo, hiss!). If your printout came out skewed, I'm sure you mis-counted. I didn't actually try that before responding, since I don't have any notes formatted in columns. I did test it now, but apparently even though the Courier font is used on the screen, the reports don't use Courier even when that is specified as the font for Notes on reports. I have no idea why not. I tried using courier (which is odd to look at now we have such font choices!) as Bob suggested, and it did line up better in notes--but still was askew when I tried printing reports. Am I being really dense? Help.
