I understand what you are saying, Bob. All I can do is reiterate my comments
and suggestion to any programmer of genealogy programs, i. e., reports
should be designed with maximum flexibility of the user in mind. In effect
that means a custom, do-it-yourself, reporting ability. Defaults and options
is the name of the game.
If you have been on the LUG for some time, or any other program group, about
25% of the users want a report that is not currently available in any
program. If there are 400 users, about 100 people want 25 different reports.
In many cases I would reject the request since they are not representative
of strict genealogy. However my livelihood does not depend on selling
programs and I don't have to cater to everyone.
In your defense the Legacy people need the frequent input of sophisticated
users to continue to upgrade the quality of the program. And it's not that
you requested something that would burden everyone, but would only be an
option if one chose to avail himself of the opportunity.
As an aside I think this type of discussion represents a learning
opportunity for most of us. I usually gain something from both the helpful
suggestions and critical responses. Maybe we all need to post "Why didn't I
think of that" by the computers. 8-)
