It's possible that you are choosing Entire Descendant Line - which often brings in most of your tree, especially if there are intermarriages between branches.
You need to choose Descendants.
If you want to include other spouses and children and parents of spouses (the people immediately surrounding the actual descendants and their spouses) then you need to tag this focus group and use the tag export options.
You can go straight to tagging and choose an empty tag number to tag the descendant line OR (useful when you have more than one item in the focus group) go to Search - Miscellaneous Search Tab and do the search on the Focus Group and then tag the search list.
Then when exporting you choose the tag option and can add the immediately surrounding people.
You say you want to export 5 generations. If there are 6 or 7 generations, I think you'd need to do it by tagging and remove the 6th and 7th generations (various ways of doing this depending on how many there are - of course it is easier if they are all living and the ones you are wanting to export aren't as you can exclude living people - but usually things aren't so neat due to the spread of ages in a generation)

Despite following the instructions in the help file under the heading Exporting GEDCOM Files and the sub heading Focus Groups have had no success.
All that seems to happen is that the whole of my File some 2000 odd names are extracted not the 40 or so names I wish to export.
I have attempted this a number of times without success even though. Am I missing a procedure not mentioned in the help file?
