Well, Bill, I use MS Digital Image Suite as my basic picture management system.
I've also done mine by family, with plenty of subdirectories to assist classification. I also have separate basic directories for the first pass scans, and then separately those that have been processed (in photoshop, paintshop pro or whatever). The general recommendation seems to be to store photos in .png format - an uncompressed format, with no loss of quality. I bought a really good scanner from Ebay - a Canon 9900F - even though Canon software is very poor quality. But the Scanner is a delight.
