Robert,

BE Kelly gave a great answer to your question concerning capitalization in
names. Just one more item is also available. When you press the "apply"
button on the option to change the "Letter Case of Given Names and
Locations"...you will then see a confirmation window that asks "Would you
like to capitalize the first letters of all given names and locations?".
Below that is an option box labeled "Convert entries that are already
mixed-case". If you check that option, then all entries will be changed
including those that you may have already fixed like the example from Kelly
of "Costa del Sol" being converted to "Costa Del Sol". However, if you
leave that option un-checked...then "Costa del Sol" should be left
unchanged. Likewise, a name like MacDonald (which is mixed case) will not
be changed to Macdonald. The special abilities of the capitalization
routine do seem to treat a few specific patterns differently. For example,
when changing a database that had all uppercase surnames, it worked fine
except on the "Mc" and "Mac" names. I ended up with "McFARLAND" instead of
Mcfarland or McFarland. There obviously needs to be a bit more logic put
into the procedure.

This is what I have done with my databases.

First, convert the given names and locations with the option checked to also
fix entries that are already mixed case. Do same with surnames.

Second, select the customize option to "Don't change what I enter" and
un-check the "Convert entries that are already mixed-case" in both. "Save"
the customize options because edits and imports are affected by these
choices as Kelly described.

Third, manually fix any names that are still not set the way you wish.

Fourth, always fix any data you want to import into your database before
actually combining that data with your clean file.

Hope this helps you with capitalization.
Ron Taylor
