Ok, OK, already here goes my contribution for what it is worth. Personally I like the word WITNESS for such as was at the birth of my daughter' third child where many friends an relatives gathered to witness the birth. But in the case of listed members of the family, I like to enter the census documentation into LEGACY and set it to document every time I hit alt 3 on the keyboard. so I start with the head of the house and work my way down the census list doing the alt 3 for every person added. Reminding you that alt 3 shows all the data about that particular census, enumeration district, number of the image, date census was taken and so on.

Please be aware if the census was taken in July and a member of the family died in January the census taker was obligated to list every one in the household to be listed that was in the house hold in 1930 for instance. So, if grandpa died in January he could hardly be a witness if he was dead. so I just call the census event a census event Thankfully we can all do what we want and how we want but I share my idea in case it might help someone with this WONDERFUL program called LEGACY to see a slightly different way to deal with these events. And I hope this helps

Ruth -- Witnesses -- in this case -- is used in the sense of "anyone
associated with the event," NOT in the sense of "observers present at the
time of the event."

I just don't see how other members of a household listed in a census can be
called "witnesses". Some of those people probably weren't home at the time
the census taker was there i.e., at work or at school - so how can they be
called witnesses?
