I don't think you can get the source detail report to show up in the correct
chronological place in the chronological report.  I thought that the source
details can only be viewed and or printed at the end of the document.  Is
there something I'm missing?

Why not use this as a source (detail) with all participants in the detail.
It is easy to link all those people to this source. Editing the source is
also easy and done in seconds for all of them.

I agree that the event clipboard was a major step in the right
direction and, in fact, use it to create pseudo linked events.  But
creating them is not the issue.  Let's say that I add 40 family
members who attended a wedding.  I create a list, add the event to the
first person, then copy it via the event clipboard to the other 39.
Takes a while but saves a lot of time.  Ten minutes later I realize
that I misspelled weddin and need to correct.  This time it is either
repeat the clipboard or do 40 edits.  That's my definition of bulky.
