Jim -- I avoid the source detail for exactly the reasons that you mentioned.
My most frequent use of the feature is for city directories and some books.
Otherwise, I create individual sources for census households, vital records,
probates, deeds, and so on.

There are a couple of problems using source details to track
individuals who share an event.  Source details don't print out on
most reports and it is difficult to search them to get lists of
people.  I have tried this approach but it was not as good as creating
via the event clipboard.
