Richard,

This is probably not an orthodox method to search, but it works for me!

When I enter the details for anyone who is (or has been married), in the suffix field I enter the surname of the marriage partner enclosed in double brackets, ie [[ ]]. I then search on the given name and behind the surname in brackets is the married name.
I don't use this naming convention when I know the woman's maiden name but for all the females for whom I have no maiden name I enter the husbands surname in double brackets as above. This yields a name of Mary [[SMITH]]. If you create a search list for all [[SMITH]]'S, first name Mary, you should be able to very quickly see who you want. The resulting list gives birth dates and checking the family tab should show which one's husband's first name is unk.
