I just did that based on the comments of an earlier user post. That did solve the problem here at my desk, but the reason for wanting to use PDF is to be able to forward the best looking documents possible to my correspondents. It seems a lot to ask to have all of them retro-grade their Acrobat Readers.

It does seem to me that it is possible that Adobe has a problem in backward compatibility to early versions of their own PDF specification.
From experience, I know that it is also possible that Millennia has done
something "kinky" in the code they place in the PDF file. Earlier Acrobat Reader versions may have tolerated it but the new one doesn't. I know that's hard to believe but it has happened!

Another option is to uninstall Acrobat 7 and then install Acrobat 6. Here is
the download link for the Adobe Acrobat Reader Version 6.0:
