Gail,
For some reason, this became broken in version 6 and still hasn't
been fixed (as of build 14 October 2005).  What I did was edit my
character ribbon to get these characters (I did this because I
use a laptop and don't have a real keypad):
< (Alt+0171)
> (Alt+0187)

Here are the "codes" you need to get the results you want.

<i>Italize</i>
<b>Bold</b>
