Before, after and about are the most "universal" date options in GENEALOGY software. Between dates cause complications with file transfers. Some researchers have their own personal versions of Est. Ca. Circa Cal. mixed in with a wide variety of event label and location abbreviations.
If an individual "flourished" in a particular year, you could guess a birth of twenty or more years earlier based on adult activities like land ownership or raising a family. Check the abbreviations allowed by the genealogy program or utility you want to use for wall charts & web sites as well as Legacy 6 deluxe. I've collected family history since 1967 including a branch in Australia and cannot recall any sources with "fl" used by genealogists. Miscellaneous words in date fields also cause complications with file transfers.
