The given name at birth should always be the primary entry as this is
(1) accepted genealogy practice and (2) legal records, etc. would be
recorded under this name. If one uses any other name it can/will cause a
great deal of confusion with descendants. As for nicknames (may well be
a middle given name) the common practice is quotes following the given
names; appearance on reports, etc. does not really enter the picture.
Any additional nicknames can be entered in the AKA fields but be sure
and use quotes here as well.
Our family records give us a lot of enjoyment but we must realize that
when we deviate from accepted genealogy practice we may well be doing a
disservice for those who follow. We really must ensure that what we
enter is clear and the only real way to do that is accepted genealogy
standards - this is what our descendants will rely upon.
