Cynthia, While this method may suit you, you should note TomM's e-mail earlier. We must always think what will someone reading this information in 50 or 100 years time make of it. Personally, I would have difficulty following your information, as I don't know if the person's birth name is William Dodd FERGUS and he was known as Dodd FERGUS, or if his birth name was Dodd FERGUS but was known as William, or any other combination. The accepted method is to show the full birth name and then enter a nickname (even if it's repeating a middle name) in quotes after it, such as William Dodd "Dodd" FERGUS.
HTH, Dermot. P.S. Without wanting to create a fuss, would it be possible for people to retain the original subject heading. This topic, which only started today, has already had three subjects. It can cause confusion for some people. It's so much easier to follow when the subject remains the same. *Please don't give out to me, I can't take it today. I'm Irish, and we've just had St. Patrick's Day here (which evolved into a long weekend ..., )* > The given name at birth should always be the primary entry as this is > (1) accepted genealogy practice and (2) legal records, etc. would be > recorded under this name.
