I do the same.

My DATA is ONLY on the USB drive.  It works like a charm.  I never get
data out of sync as both the desktop and the laptop use the SAME data
file (I have the Legacy PROGRAM installed on both the desktop and the
laptop.

I have the backup message set to remind me EVERY time I exit Legacy,
and backup to BOTH the laptop and the desktop, depending upon which
machine I am currently using.  This way, I have copies of my databases
in THREE places; the USB drive, the desktop drive, and the laptop
drive.
