Hi Stephen,
These are my methods, and reasons behind them:

1) Wife with unknown maiden name: I used to use [---?---] for an
unknown surname, following the recommendations of the "Professional
Genealogy" textbook, however it hampered Legacy's automatic searches
of the IGI and Internet. (A name Mary [---?---] will not match a Mary
with no last name entered.) I have changed this now to using the
Private Notes brackets [[Sullivan]] where Sullivan is her married
name. It only appears to me in my index, but not on reports or my
Rootsweb Worldconnect tree. I am still not 100% sure which method I
really want to use on this, so may change my mind in the future, yet
again!

2) Unnamed infant: If I know the sex of the child, I enter (Male) or
(Female), similar to the listings in a vital records index. If I do
not know the sex, I enter (Infant) -- all are in parenthesis.

3) Siblings with unknown parents: I create only the unknown father by
adding a father, but not editing the name. I have Legacy set up to
automatically use the same surname of the first sibling to create the
father's last name. Then I start adding additional children. I do not
enter anything for the mother. For index purposes (and I hadn't
thought about doing this yet, so will probably go and revise mine),
you could put [[Father]] or [[Patriarch]] in the given name so the
person will be more readily identifiable in your Name List.
