I always leave it blank.

I enter my data in another program, and import it into Legacy via GEDCOM.

If I discover a spouse and children, I enter them in the other program, and
in the GEDCOM the new spouse comes in with an "unknown" spouse. I then click
on "add wife" or "add husband", and link the person already in the database,
and the family is complete. But if there is an entry there for an "unknown" p-
erson, rather than a blank, you end up with two marriages, one of which then
has to be unlinked.

This may not be a problem for those who only use Legacy, and use it as their
program of first data entry.
