Dee,
Once you have selected the "Initial caps" and selected "Apply", you do not have to select "don't change what I enter" as the program will remember that you wanted them in "Initial Caps", and will continue to Initial Caps your surnames. Checking or unchecking any other box will not change anything unless you click "Apply" again, as this will ""Apply"" that change to the entire database. You can check this and verify by clicking a different box, without hitting the Apply button and then typing a Surname in lower case or all Upper Case and you will see it change to Initial Caps. If it doesn't, then the 'don't change what I type' is on was applied. Try it with the other choices and hit the apply button to see the effects. If you get a surname that doesn't follow the Initial Caps rule (ie. DeWilliam or DeWhomever or De Whomever) you can open the Master Surname List and edit the name there and it will not change it to the Initial Caps format but will keep what you entered. After the name has been edited there, when you enter the name in the name field and if you see it change to Initial Caps just click on the button that opens the master list and pick the correct name.

First setting to "Initial Caps" fixed the entries. Then, when I added a new individual, the surname (which was already in the database) did NOT come in all caps. Whew. I was then able to go back to "don't change what I enter".

However, I would say that the mess I was in seems like a bug, since I had
told it to not change what I enter, but it still insisted on giving me all
caps.

Hooray! This was the answer I needed. Many, many thanks.

Dee

You want the box above the one you are referring to -"Letter Case of
Surnames". In version 5 (assuming 6 is same): options>customize>data
format>letter case of surnames, select "intial caps" and save. Then (if so
desired) go back in and change to "Don't change what I enter".

Subject: [LegacyUG] autocomplete names capitalized

I cannot find this in the archives, so here goes:

Before I knew better, I capitalized all my surnames. Now, no matter what
I
do, Legacy autocompletes them in capitals. (In the Options-Customize-Data
Format-Displaying Surnames the box for Show SURNAMES in uppercase letters
is
NOT checked.) The only way I can find to undo this is to go to each
surname
individually, add the name in lower case after the uppercase version, then backspace to remove the uppercase version. This is extremely tedious, and
doesn't solve the problem of future entries. Even now, every time I try
to
add a new person with a surname I had previously entered in caps, it shows
up in caps.

Is there a way to remove these old, erroneous autocompletes?
Is there a way to change all my surnames at once to Upper/Lower case?
Remember, this is NOT a matter of unchecking the box.

Many thanks in advance,

Dee Whiting
