Uh, because the marriage field is for marriages??
Or at least for "unions".  It does already include a field for defining
the state of the union, which can be "Other" or "Common Law" etc.
There has been some discussion of Millennia adding witnesses to
various events.  These were usually friends.  So friends are being added
via the "back door" of witnesses.
