Hi Winifred,

It's good advice to keep all data in My Documents. It makes backing up so much easier.

When you are logged into your computer in your name
My Documents
and
C:\Documents and Settings\Winifred\My Documents\
are exactly the same folder.

In Windows Explorer you can get to your My Documents either directly through the "shortcut" My Documents or navigating through Documents and Settings.

If you had other users on your computer - say Cathy
When you went to Windows Explorer Cathy's My Documents would be under
C:\Documents and Settings\Cathy\My Documents.
I think the folder even shows as Cathy's Documents (I only have one user on my computer as well so am working from memory) and they may not be accessible to you (depending on your level of access and passwords) unless you logged in as Cathy. That's why you'll also find Shared Documents under
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\

Anyone wondering why I put My Pictures directly under C:\ instead of the default My Documents\My Pictures ...

1) Backup of My Docs to CD - My Docs used to backup to one C without My Pictures in it. Now it doesn't so maybe I'll relieve it of some other folders as well. ;-)

2) Legacy stores the path to pictures, not the pictures themselves. When changing from one computer to another, it's easier to keep the path the same with My Pictures directly under C:\ My path in Documents and Settings is different on laptop and desktop as one uses my initials.

Cheers,
Cathy

?Hi Cathy:
Some time ago you answered my letter concerning a glitch I have in my
Legacy database, and sent me much good advice including advice about the
placement of data and pictures on a Windows XP computer. You said you place
your data files including Legacy data in My Documents, and your pictures in
C:\My Pictures, and your Legacy pictures in C:\My Pictures\\Legacy
Pictures.
I understand the picture placement, but have questions about the
Data.
I took a class in Windows XP after I bought my new computer. The
instructor advised us to put data files in c:\Documents and
Settings\Winifred\My Documents\Legacy Data instead of straight into My
Documents. That seems like a long handle to me.Then data files are found in
3 places, all in My Documents, when using "Explore." Is that how you do it,
and if so, why and if not, how? This method confuses me since there are no
other users on my computer, but me!
If you can clarify this for me, your advice will be much
appreciated. Your method sounds good to me and I would like to know more
about it.
        Thank you and best wishes
             Winifred
