Hello,
My advice would be NOT to store them under the My Documents folder but in a different folder on the harddrive especially if you don't do regular backups of the My Documents folder. I have all my genealogy files and programs under C:\Roots\ and then subfolders depending on what they are such as for documents: C:\Roots\Census, Maps, Land records, GED, FTW. For Legacy my directory looks like this: C:\Roots\Legacy\Data. For pictures of family I have a C:\Roots\Picture\SURNAME subfolders. I only use the My documents folder for documents that I am currently working on or reviewing. Once they are finished I copy them to the folder where they should go. Now for the reason why I suggest not to store anything that is important under My documents is that the Username/My Documents folder is a part of the windows OS environment. I recently had a problem with my Windows OS becoming corrupted and had to reinstall windows. When you reinstall windows the My Documents folder gets written over and recreated thus wiping anything you had there. Even if you tell the install to keep the directory structure. If your username was password protected you will not be able to access those files even though they are still there. I was lucky in that most of my genealogy stuff was in a separate folder outside of the My Documents folder and was able to access them but had to reinstall the programs that were needed. I did have some genealogy documents in My Documents and was never able to access them including stuff in My pictures and My videos. File manager saw the files but when I tried to access them I was given an error message of "Access denied"

?Hi Cathy:
Some time ago you answered my letter concerning a glitch I have in my
Legacy database, and sent me much good advice including advice about the
placement of data and pictures on a Windows XP computer. You said you place your data files including Legacy data in My Documents, and your pictures in
C:\My Pictures, and your Legacy pictures in C:\My Pictures\\Legacy
Pictures.
I understand the picture placement, but have questions about the
Data.
I took a class in Windows XP after I bought my new computer. The
instructor advised us to put data files in c:\Documents and
Settings\Winifred\My Documents\Legacy Data instead of straight into My
Documents. That seems like a long handle to me.Then data files are found in 3 places, all in My Documents, when using "Explore." Is that how you do it,
and if so, why and if not, how? This method confuses me since there are no
other users on my computer, but me!
If you can clarify this for me, your advice will be much
appreciated. Your method sounds good to me and I would like to know more
about it.
       Thank you and best wishes
            Winifred
