Well that's sort of how Generations and another program
(Heredis I think?) work. I'll betcha that Reunion on the Mac
does the same thing.
What Generations does/did is as follows.
In the genie database program, called Easy Tree, you did all
your data entry stuff etc, and when you wanted to make a tree,
you selected "create tree" on the program menu and it would use
the currently "active" person as the root of the tree, by default.
I think you could change the "root" person in a dialog box that
came up. And the User also specified the type of the tree
(ancestor, descendant, hourglass) and the data he/she wanted
to include. It then made the chart based on these inputs, in
another window. Only that program really didn't make the chart
because...
Behind the scenes, the new window that just popped up with the
chart in it was actually controlled by another program running.
In this genealogy graphics charting program/window you could
re-arrange boxes, color lines and backgrounds, etc. This is actually
not a lot different from the way Tree-Draw actually works today.
Except the user interface was much easier to use and there was
better user control of the various charting options, at least for
Tree Draw V3 that I last used.
