LEP (Leo Edit Pane, I'm calling it) splits each pane where its running into an edit view and a rendered view. So pictures could be shown in the rendered half because it's markdown, or because it's HTML, or because it's an ipython / jupyter in/out pair like: https://danieltakeshi.github.io/assets/jupyter_2.png The split's optional, you can have just the edit or just the view mode. For editing text and pictures together, CKEditor is already embedded in Leo, with image sizing and alignment / wrapping and captioning etc. etc. http://sdk.ckeditor.com/samples/captionedimage.html (aka richtext plugin).
