Lin Clark's blog <https://hacks.mozilla.org/author/lclarkmozilla-com/> contains this announcement <https://hacks.mozilla.org/2019/11/announcing-the-bytecode-alliance/> about the Bytecode Alliance <https://bytecodealliance.org/>. This indicates to me that the devs behind webasm aren't wearing black hats. Lin's announcement is an excellent intro to security issues, and an interesting proposal to fix security holes at their source.
