Yes, it was a conscious decision. The page ends up looking unbalanced with the links and the logo and the menu all on the left side, at least that was our opinion. We did try it at the left at first, and after much tweaking and playing around decided we liked it on the right side.

Oh, and you can make the menu selections look more like "tabs" using
CSS with relative ease.

Sure. :) But again, the look is intentional. Out of curiosity, what did you have in mind there?
