Interesting, I haven't installed gnumeric in a while, but I have a similar problem with pidgin. If I compile perl as the book describes then the pidgin compile fails like so: /usr/bin/ld: /usr/lib/perl5/5.12.0/x86_64-linux/CORE/libperl.a(op.o): relocation R_X86_64_32S against `PL_sv_yes' can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC /usr/lib/perl5/5.12.0/x86_64-linux/CORE/libperl.a: could not read symbols: Bad value collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make[5]: *** [perl.la] Error 1 make[5]: Leaving directory `/home/andy/pidgin-2.6.6/libpurple/plugins/perl' make[4]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 make[4]: Leaving directory `/home/andy/pidgin-2.6.6/libpurple/plugins' make[3]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 make[3]: Leaving directory `/home/andy/pidgin-2.6.6/libpurple' make[2]: *** [all] Error 2 make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/andy/pidgin-2.6.6/libpurple' make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/andy/pidgin-2.6.6' make: *** [all] Error 2 andy:~/pidgin-2.6.6$ If I compile perl with -Duseshrplib then the pidgin compile succeeds. Another option is to similar to your situation with gnumeric, I could compile pidgin with --disable-perl, I don't know what functionality would be lost (it seems to work Ok) but I'd prefer not to disable options if I can avoid it.
