I was taking that recommendation from the kernel documentation and code.
Initramfs *is* the default boot method in all kernels since 2.6.pretty_early,
as a matter of code. And the documentation in the kernel tree -- from at least
as far back as 2005 -- says that, while non-initramfs-boot will be supported
for a good while in order to avoid breaking things, early-userspace boot is the
way of the future.
