[Assume it does solve the problem here on my "old" rig (E8400)]

PS  I find it a strange almost-coincidence:
On my "new" ASUS Ivy machine, the only Linux driver module I was
supposed to install separately was an RTL Ethernet Gigabit called
 r8168
