Good morning, everyone...

In the overnight hours this morning, Kharma's news server was taken down
at about 1:30 to perform some much-needed maintenance work, including the
replacement of a switch that has been occasionally giving me fits, and a
hard drive that was showing signs of its advanced age.

The switch was over four years old, the hard disk just over three years,
and both were tired and in need of replacement. News spool hard disks, in
my experience of things, seldom last longer than 2-3 years. Even expensive
SCSI drives seldom last much longer than that. This makes the eighth hard
disk replacement in the history of the news server, the twelfth for the
entire Kharma domain.

Normal maintenance on The Used Kharma Lot is performed on the first and
fifteenth of each month, as needed.
