In fact, I forgot to mention that I am seeing this problem in two PCs that are different so far as CPU, chipset and motherboard are concerned; but both are running 32-bit Win7. I would not be surprised if this turned out to be specific to 32-bit version of Win7 (and not found even in 64-bit version of Win7). I have already come across a problem like that in 3.6.4, which existed in 4.0.0.1 but vanished in 4.0.0.2 alpha, although it is not specifically mentioned in the change log.
