Oh, and I forgot to say..
I am still running BIOS 6.4, which works fine.
The fdisk error I got was due to the harddisk being formated by WIN98 and me
using a DOS6.22 boot disk which doesn't recognise WIN9+ formated FAT32 disks.
Once I used a WIN95 startup disk the drive could be partitioned and formated
[after the pins were bridged]
Many thanks to everybody who responded to my call for help - I though I was
going bananas over this drive not working!
