For your purposes (and for general GPS use under Windows), I'd suggest
looking at the freeware "Power Pro", found at www.windowspowerpro.com .
One of the many things it can do is to let you define "hot keys" (or
create clickable buttons) that will send user-defined keystokes to an
application. I have it set up with Street Atlas so a "left mouse click"
gets me the voice prompt for "next turn", "right mouse click" gets me the
voice prompt for "time to end", and "chord click" gets me "current road".
With these, I just shut the lib, and get my directions via mouse clicks
(it's a *great* use for the "outside" mouse buttons!) I expect that an
mp3 player can be controlled in the same way, though I haven't tried.
