The imaging software preserves the exact bit-pattern on the disk. Which means that you can make disks with various formats and flavours, and they don't even have to be readable with the system you have running. Though this is not guaranteed to work if you want to do things like stuffing 1.8M onto a 1.4M disk, per some microsoft installation floppies.
