By "Defualt" most all Routers and Win2K and WinXP have Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol (DHCP) active, so all you have to do is plug in the
CAT5 cables. If you're using static IP's you have to assign the addresses,
like you mentioned below.
The last octet can range from 001 to 254.

ps Windows98 and below is a little harder to setup.

good luck

I don't think you want to be setting the IP addresses manually, though it is
possible.

It is much easier to use the built-in DHCP server that (presumably) the
westel 327w has and then just configure the TCP/IP Properties on your client
machines to say "Obtain an IP address automatically".

Then you should be all set.

Wonders of wonders... a ray of hope in the vast sea of confusion and problems that practically defines the computer experience, it >was< indeed that simple. Thanks for the feedback guys.

The 1st thing I did was to see how I set the IP addesses a number of months back when I networked my L100 running W98 to the desktop running WXP. I found I had indeed assigned a fixed IP address on the XP system. I just changed that back to "Obtain an IP address automatically" as you pointed out James, and confirmed the "Obtain an DNS address automatically" was set. Then made sure I had the same settings for the TCP/IP settings in W98 on the Lib. Plugged the cables into the router and was off an running in broadband on 3 systems.

Only one glitch remains I haven't figured out. I've had one desktop, say "Desktop A", networked with my L100 for some time. They both are set to the same workgroup name. When I hooked the DSL up to the 2nd desktop, say "Desktop B", I ran the WXP network setup wizard on it, gave the system a name, and filled in the workgroup that the other 2 systems have been set for. So all 3 systems are plugged into the modem/router, and all 3 systems have access to the net via DSL. "Desktop A" can see the L100 and transfer files. The L100 can see "Desktop A" and transfer files. But neither of them can see "Desktop B". And "Desktop B" can't see either of them. "Desktop B" reports the right workgroup. So I'm a bit stumped for the moment.

And oh... I did remember to set sharing for the one C: drive on "Desktop B" to a "read only" status for other systems on the network. But it seems at one point I had to set up sharing differently on "Desktop A" in order to get the L100 to access it. I'll see if I can remember what that was.
