Smart way, which almost everyone does:

1) buy a wireless or wired router for $10-20 after rebate on sale (see
www.fatwallet.com/c/18/ or local sunday newspaper ads for computer stores for
these deals).

2) hook it up:

incoming line -> DSL or cable modem -> router -> to all of your laptops and
PCs that also have a network card in them.

3) You only need one IP address. The router creates an internal network and
assigns internal IP addresses to all of your local PCs by itself w/o requiring
any more IP addresses from your provider.

4) The advantage of routers is that it also provides (usually in most of them)
a firewall, MAC filtering, and other protective services.

   a) Here, you do want to activate the firewall and only open ports you use
outside of basic email & web browsing (eg. file sharing, ftp, etc).
   b) Also, add IP/MAC filtering. You will restrict the IP addresses to the
exact number of machines you have connected, and if possible, limit the access
to only the MAC addresses you have in each PC. This prevents outside users
from hacking into your internal network and pretending to be one of your PCs.
   c) See manual for other things you can do to protect your router.

5) !!!!!! change the default password on the router!!!!

   a) If it's a wireless router, also disable SSID broadcast, change the
default name & password, and turn on WPA/WEP encryption (WPA prefered)!
