Flash isn't that bad, these days. The prices and chip sizes have been improving dramatically in the last couple years. However, an even better solution would be to bootstrap your Libby from the IDE drive, then run the primary OS off of a CF card in the cardbus slot. In that way you could get 2.5x the read speed (10MB/s for a CF card vs 4MB/s for the maxed out ISA IDE controller).
