No please, lets keep a versioned dir under /usr/include (for linux / bsd) and put out public headers there + a pkg-config file to get the CFLAGS to find the headers, this way multiple versions can peacefully co-exist on the same system. And being able to install multiple versions at the same time is an important feature!
