IMO converting across would be preferable - the libxml CVS is set up similarly to what you described now (0.3.8 is a branch, trunk is 0.4. The DEV_0_4 branch is dead). That said, I guess it's not the end of the world starting from scratch, but it just seems 'wrong' to me :) Btw, if you want to add me on as a developer I'll be happy to help out where I can.
