I am using MDK 9.0 and it is whatever qt it installs. But I may try compiling from 
source.

Did you install QT from source?
If you are using Debian, you should probably install QT from source
just for Licq compiles.  The QT 3.x packages in Debian are
apparently broken.  There are a multitude of packages and some of
them are not compatible with the others.  It is worth the hassle of
compiling QT from source.
