Oops! We broke the wrong slurs.
It is not the slur between the first and second endings that should break,
but rather
1) the slur from the entry to the endings to the second and later endings,
and
2) the slur from the end of each ending but the last, to the start of the
repeat.
We fooled ourselves with examples where both 1 and 2 are present, because
then the slurs between endings break (by coincidence) into the pieces we
need.
