To fix the original bug, generation of the \free)( would need to be
automatic, yes. The hope would be that simple input like comment 64 gives
correct output like comment 63 or 69.
Maybe the repeat_volta_engraver (which in the patch above was watching for
slurs crossing from one alternative to another and generating events to
break them) could watch for slurs as described in comment 69, remember the
relevant facts, and generate the required broken-end slurs at the required
positions.
