In my experience on my Mac, Frescobaldi installation works fine, other than dealing with the Apple security stuff. There is a quirk in how the app opens, which as I recall is known (if you double click on a .ly file, it doesn't open in Frescobaldi; it launches but you get an Untitled window and have to use File > Open... from within the app to open the file. This is v 4.0.1). The built-in tools for Frescobaldi are so good that I don't use any other environment for editing .ly files.
