On a PC, select the cast member. THen select the thumbnail image of the of member in the Property Inspector. Right click on the thumbnail and you can copy/paste thumbnails.
Same works on a Mac. Control-click if you don't have two mouse buttons.
You can also use lingo to automate the process after designing your custom thumbnail. Might make nice miaw utility:
(member "n").thumbnail = (member "some bitmap").picture
